Alana Murphy

As Assistant Editor, Alana Murphy accesses materials in English, French, and German; she also searches interdisciplinary publications for music-related scholarly content, especially in the domains of science, humanities, and anthropology/cultural studies.

Murphy holds an M. Phil in musicology from the CUNY Graduate Center, where her specializations included Romanticism, semiotics, and music-dance relationships. Prior to her time in NYC, she earned BM and an MM in piano performance from Indiana University, as well as a BA in French Literature. She has taught various courses in music history, music theory, aural skills, and piano at IU and in the CUNY system. Murphy remains active as a solo and collaborative pianist around the NYC area and has developed a specialization in accompanying dance. She also sings with the professional early music ensemble Polyhymnia. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband Arthur and their two rescue coonhounds Layla and Charlie.
